BACKGROUND

First of all I’d like to let everyone know that I’m a hunter and outdoorsman at heart. As part of my love for the outdoors, I’ve always been interested in preserving those great moments, so video and photography was, and still is, a big part of my outdoor adventures. My knowledge about cameras, electronics, computers and video editing was all learned along the way. The following is a brief story of how I got into building scouting cameras, and video editing.

Scouting Cameras

What got me started on scouting cameras was being intrigued as to what game were lurking in my hunting areas when I wasn’t around.  Manufactured, store bought scouting cameras were expensive, so I did some web surfing and found plans to build my own.  I built my first one which was a film camera hooked up to a sensor from a garage motion light.  After many trips, and having to wait to get film developed I soon came to realize that I needed to look into “Digital”.

Without much of an electronic background, I was nervous to “hack” into an expensive digital camera to modify it to work as a scouting camera. With a bit of nervous sweat, and tons of help from the people on the Trail Camera Forums such as Jesse’s Hunting and Outdoors, Pixcontroller, and Chasingame to name a few, I was able to successfully produce my first digital scouting camera! Since then it’s been an addicting hobby, and in order to keep building them without going broke, I started building for others. I’ve now been building digital scouting cameras for about 4 years, and have put them to the test in “Canadian” conditions.

Video Editing

This also started off as a hobby editing and producing family hunting footage. I was 13 years old, and had just entered my first ever hunting season, when my dad bought a brand new 8mm analogue camcorder. My dad would sacrifice sitting in his deer stand most mornings, so that he could film me hunt waterfowl and upland game. I can remember wanting to get back home so fast so that we could watch the footage of our hunts.

As the years went on the videos got even better, and we even tried doing some rough editing so that when other relatives would visit, we could show them just the highlights of our hunting season, and they didn’t have to sit through hours of footage. Every year the videos and editing became more and more professional.

A couple years ago my cousin approached me about editing some archery hunting footage from the Manitoba Bowhunting Records club members, and producing a video that would be sold as a fundraiser for their club.  It was a huge hit! and ended up being sold all over North America, and even ended up in some hunting stores.

I was also approached by a Bow manufacturing company (APA Innovations) right here in Saskatchewan to do a commercial for them.  I went out and shot footage of their products in action, and edited and produced a 15 second and 30 second commercial.  Nibal at APA was very pleased with my work and this is what spurred me to add the video editing part to my small business.

I hope to be able to offer video editing/production for anything outdoors related, and not only for companies but all outdoors people alike. I can do anything from family outdoor footage for preserving memories, to commercials, or promotional videos for hunting/fishing lodges, stores or outdoor companies.  I can edit footage people send to me, or go out and film for them.
